The HIEROGLYPHIC STAIRWAY is the city's most famous and important monument, as it records the history and achievements of the dynasty from its establishment until 755 AD when it was dedicated. It was the work of the 15th king, Smoke Shell, the builder. It is the longest inscription ever discovered in the Mayan lands. There are 63 steps with carvings on all the cants; banisters have serpentine and bird-like motifs. The whole thing measures approximately 30 ft. wide by 60 ft. high. The story told in glyphs is not completely understood as the stairway was partially ruined and stones jumbled during excavation. Stela M, probably of King Smoke Shell, stands at the base of the stairway, glyphs tell of the solar eclipse in that year.
