We are now in the Gran Plaza (Plaza of the Stelae) and Ceremonial Court with 9 stelae and several altars. Stelae are huge, intricately carved sculptures portraying the rulers of Copán, most of the best dated from AD 613 to 738. All seem to have been painted originally and traces of red paint can be seen on some. Most have vaults under the base in which sacrifices and offerings were placed. Deposits have been found of crude clay vessels, jade beads, and fish and bird bones. This stela may be of King 18 Rabbit, a popluar king.
