In the center (some protected under thatched roofs) are several stela-altar pairs: A stela (a monument resembling a large tombstone) is typically carved with a single standing personage, richly garbed and ornamented on its front; an altar is always placed in front of the stela. Increasing evidence suggests that the person depicted was probably of the ruling class, or perhaps a priest; when that person died it's possible that related monuments and temples may have been ritualistically destroyed, with another structure built over it later . . .
