As one literally 'slides' into the next station, you "lift" your body up slightly with your right hand, thus putting pressure on the cable slowing you down so you don't crash into the tree - the guide is there to make sure you don't. I guess that's why you put your feet out so if things go wrong you smack the tree with your feet - ouch - and not your face. We wore heavy leather gloves for the "burning-in" phase . . .
