. . . Temple I is a 9-tiered pyramid. The number 9 was sacred to the Mayas. The temple atop the pyramid contains 3 small rooms. Atop the temple is the lofty roofcomb. Typically the rulers/royalty would ascend pyramids for ceremonial affairs. Incense would burn at the base of the temple, rising up inside and out through the roofcomb. Small pottery incense burners that have been found in the ruins have the same construction.
